Faith vs. Works
While it may be absolutely true that we are saved by the grace of God, and that God’s righteousness has been imputed to us on the grounds of faith; it also remains true that faith expresses itself thought acts of obedience (works). Therefore, faith without works is dead. And so, there is pragmatism associated with our faith, which is always accompanied with a corresponding act of obedience to God’s Word. In this sense, it is not the works of our righteousness that produces the glory, but rather it is our simple act of obedience to the written word of God; this shows the condition of the human heart toward God. The emphasis is on what Christ has done for us and not on what we have done for him; the fact is, Christ died for our sins!
In order to fully understand the themes in the book of Romans, it becomes essential for us to fully grasp this concept of grace, works and righteousness.
Romans 4:1-5 Justification is a result of faith in Christ.
Titus 3:4-7 Not based upon our righteousness deeds, but by His grace and mercy are we saved:
Romans 3:10-18 – None righteous no not one Isaiah 64:6 – filthy rags
Romans 5:6-8 – when we were without strength
James 2:14-26 There is pragmatism associated with our faith, which is always accompanied with a corresponding act of obedience to God’s Word
Acts 26:20 There are works consistent with repentance; or corresponding action associated with genuine faith in whatever one is believing God for. Matthew 3:8 AMP
Romans 4:17-25 Abraham’s faith is our ultimate example of how faith is expressed through corresponding action consistent with it.
